Minutes from our Nov 15th Meeting

Lori called meting to order at 10:05 a.m. at Quilts n Crafts n Things, our new meeting place.
Thank you to Bill and Eileen.

Mary and Donna have withdrawn from the group in order to focus on their art quits.  Thank you for getting the group off the ground and know that you are always welcome to return.

We got 6 Green/black quilt blocks.  Molly was the lucky winner.  No new strips were distributed.

Our December luncheon will be at Sweet and Savory on December 20 at 10 a.m.  Please notify Lorilei before Dec if you will be attending.  The gift exchange will consist of ½ yard of quality quilting fabric wrapped.

Show and Tell

Lois, Arleen and Penny all showed off their most recent creations.  All very lovely.  Arleen’s 100 blocks modern quilt will be extraordinary!

Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt on line:  Quiltville.com for colors and weekly instructions

Quilts for Louisiana and North Carolina

2 more quilts were turned in for LA.  Dianne will package them up for delivery on December 1.  If you have any quilts, new or gently used, know that they will be used by those in need.  Just a note, table toppers or wall hangings or holiday doodads would be a nice gift for someone who has lost everything in a flood.

January 1 is the deadline for collecting quilts for here in North Carolina.  Moly will be the contact person on this project.

Babs is having an open house this Sunday for a friend who is selling Christmas ornaments.  Contract her if you are interested.

Work progressed on the “Kindness” quilt(s) for Louisiana or NC.  (don’t know which).  The quarters were a bit cramped, but we managed.

New Meeting Location

HI All:
You have probably heard that Sew Happins is closing it's doors in December. We are unable to meet there in November and needed to find a new place to meet.

I spoke with Bill Parent and his sister Eileen over at Quilting-n-Crafts-n-Things in Wilmington today. They have graciously opened up their classroom to us...same day, same time- next meeting will be Nov 15th at 10 a.m. in our new location- 1616 Shipyard Avenue, Wilmington.

This will be our new meeting location going forward!

There are even 2 lunch locations in the same strip mall for those that want to do lunch.
This next meeting will be our charity quilt sew- Molly and Babs have it all ready to go. You will need to bring your machine, sewing supplies and gray thread in your machine if you want to sew...OR you can bring your own charity sew project if you have one in the works!

We can use their ironing boards and cutting tables...they do request we use our OWN rotary cutters ....

We have very much enjoyed our time at Sew Happins and wish John and Sarah all the best as they go forward. As for us, we too, have a new experience ahead of us!

Hope you'll join us at our new meeting place! See you then--

Lorelei

Cape Fear Modern Quilting Guild minutes Oct 19, 2016

Lorelei welcomed everyone.

1 new member: Claire Malczyn—Welcome

Ann did the member spotlight showing many lovely family antique quilts and some that are almost done (except for the binding!)  She also showed us examples of some beautiful costuming she has done.  Thank you Ann.

Our challenge blocks showed us that we needed additional guidelines.  Arleen won the 13 blocks that were submitted.  Holy Scrap Bee has offered to help with the quilt.  If you have any of your blue strip left over, please give it to a Holy Scrap member as soon as possible. Pictures are on our FB page.

New Parameters for the continuing Modern Quilt Square Challenge

  • Use the provided strip (Green for November)
  • Add a neutral (Solid black for November)
  • These 2 colors should constitute 50% of your block
  • Use any other fabric for the remainder of the block
  • Please trim to 12 ½”

Kindness Quilt:  We have decided to include Pender County to Louisiana on our Kindness Quilts Donation due to the recent flooding here in North Carolina.
Wanda brought bags and boxes.  So far we have 4 quilts, 1 each from Lois and Mary, and 2 from Donna.  Bring any completed quilts in November.

Show and tell:  Joyce brought her color crayon challenge quilt.  It was lovely.
Mary showed her original design Quilters by the Sea challenge and talked about her creative process.   Pictures are on our FB page.

Our November meeting is a sew-in.  Bring your own quilt to construct or you can participate in the quilt Molly and Babs have chosen for us.  Either way, bring your sewing machine, neutral thread and other supplies that you may need.

Lunch at Mission Barbeque was fun.  Always good to continue the conversation!

Announcements
Penny—Her brother is an Episcopalian priest in the Baton Rouge area.  Many people have lost everything in the flood.  Over 200 families are eligible and in need of assistance.  The group decided to gather as many new or “almost” new to send to these families to be re-homed.  Karen and Julie volunteered to long arm quilt some of the quilt tops.  Dianne will receive the quilts and hold them until they can be packaged and mailed to Baton Rouge.  Wanda has boxes that we can use for shipping and it was also suggested that we vacuum pack the quilts before shipping.  We plan to pay for the postage out of our guilds funds.

New Challenge begins.  Ann brought in 2 ½” strips for everyone who want to participate.  We need to make one 12 ½” modern square using the strip.  There will be a drawing during the October meeting, the winner to assemble the quilt (as they please) with the finished quilt to be donated either to Baton Rouge or another charity.  Molly will bring in our next fifteen 2 ½” strips for distribution, another drawing and another quilt

Arleen talked about the 100 block challenge on Instagram.  She has about 50 blocks done.  Says she is getting better at ¼” seams and cutting!  And on top of that she will have a beautiful quilt when she’s done!  Go Arleen!

Mary will post the links for Modern Quilting show and tell.

CFMQ Guild - Meeting notes from July 19th

Lorelei was out of town and Donna was working so Mary (Communications Chair) ran the meeting and took notes.

Welcome New Members:  Sue, Wanda, Joyce & Alice.   Teddy is also back and re-joined.   Welcome back Teddy.

Treasurers Report (Karen):  We currently 23 paid members and have $257.48 on our books.

Program:  Christmas in July - Members shared little gift projects that they have made or had given to them with the group.

Here are some website for some of the gift ideas that Karen shared:
 * Thread catcher - http://www.redhenfabrics.com/freebies
 * Tuffed Pin cushion - https://www.connectingthreads.com
 * Needle book - http://mythreesonsknit.blogspot.com
Thank you Karen for providing the websites.

Round-Robin Challenge:   Continue to bring them in and share them at future meetings as you complete them.

Next Challenge:   Mary and Donna share their idea for our next challenge and the group tweeted it a bit and about 12 people said that they were willing to participate in it.
The New Challenge (we'll call it our Monthly Modern Block Challenge) will kick off at our Sept meeting.

All about our Monthly Modern Block Challenge:

  • Each month, one member will bring 2 1/2" strips to hand out to all of those participating in the challenge.   The strip must be a solid.
  • Participants will take the strip and make a 12 1/2" modern block (of your choice.... from a book / website) and bring it to the following month meeting.   Additional fabrics from your stash can be used to make your block, but you MUST include the solid 2 1/2" strip someplace in your block.   Note:  the 2 1/2" strip of solid fabric is what will tie all the blocks together.
  • At the following month's meeting we will share our block and discuss the techniques.   This way we will all get fresh ideas from each other on modern block techniques/designs.
  • We will then raffle off the block and one member (who participated in the challenge) will take home all the blocks to make up into a charity quilt.   Note: you will only be able to win one set of blocks during this challenge.  That way everyone gets to go home with a set (over the timeframe of the challenge).
  • Another 2 1/2" solid strip will be give out to the challenge group for our next month's Monthly Modern Block Challenge as we repeat the process each month.
  • We will discuss any adjustments to the rules at our monthly meetings.
  • At the end of the challenge,  all participants should have a set of modern blocks to make into a charity quilt.
  • We will also discuss some modern quilting techniques prior to quilting up your charity quilt.

There are lot of definitions of Modern Quilting.  Here one that might help you in your design.

What is Modern Quilting?

Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. "Modern traditionalism" or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting.

Volunteer Request:  We are looking for someone to take minutes/notes at our meetings (since Donna is currently working on Tuesdays).   They would type them up and email them to Mary so she can put them up on our website.   Mary is already handling our Website and Facebook and is not looking to take on another role.

Some Challenge ideas for 2016

At our Jan meeting we talked about Goals and Challenges for 2016.

Here are some Modern Tutorials that Donna thought you might be interested in.
Tutorial - http://www.ohfransson.com/all-projects/mod-mosaic-quilt-blocks
Tutorial - https://themodernquiltguild.wordpress.com/category/100-days-of-modern-quilting/

Possible 2016 Challenges
We also talked about Challenges ideas for 2016.  Here are some Challenge ideas that Donna found online.

  • Solid color challenge
  • Paint chip challenge:  3 colors plus same neutral color for all participants
  • Art challenge:  Bring your block (any size) inspired by the element that you picked: Earth, Air, Fire or Water. Wouldn’t it be fun to put together an entire quilt built from those Element inspired blocks?
  • Challenge: This month’s challenge is all about your imagination!  Make a block inspired by architecture. That’s the whole structure or an interesting feature-tile floor, carved door or interesting shaped window perhaps. Let your eye roam and your fabric fly!
  • App Quilting!  Make a block inspired by your favorite smartphone app or computer program … or the one you wish you had.
  • Challenge – Neon!  Create a quilt square or other project incorporating neon (fluorescent) solid or patterned fabric.
  • Charity challenge: Create a placemat designed in a modern aesthetic to be donated to Meals on Wheels! Placemats should be big enough to hold a plate, glass and silverware on its surface (eg, 11″x17″). Scott G  http://keptinstitches.org/tutorials/placemat-tutorial-2/) has a great placemat tutorial on his blog!  Another tutorial: http://www.alissahaightcarlton.com/placemat-pattern/
  • Challenge:  Create a quilt square of any size which is inspired by a quilt that you saw at a recent quilt show (bring picture of quilt inspiration with your show and tell)

We'll discuss them and any other ideas that you may have at our Feb meeting.
