Cape Fear Modern Quilting Guild - Minutes from Sept. 16, 2013 Meeting

Welcome back from our summer break.  Great to see everyone again and catch up and see all your quilted projects.

1 - Name change:  The Board met last week to discuss the name change and affiliation with the national organization.  The national organization has decided to collect dues based on individual guild membership.  For our small guild to join, it would cost individuals about $40 per year.  An individual membership is $25.   No magazine comes with the membership.  Access to the national guild’s website and discounts to their convention.  So the board decided to change our name since we couldn’t keep the “modern quilt guild” name and changed the name to “Cape Fear Modern Quilting Guild”.  Our membership fees will stay at $5. and we will use some of the dues to give the current president an Individual Membership to the National Guild.  If you have any questions, please feel free to talk to Kathy.

2. Board Members:  We were not very successful rounding up a nominating committee, but our current Officers have graciously agreed to hold office for another year 9/13 - 9/14.   We will start looking for a new Officers in the Spring of 2014.

3. Treasurer’s report:  Karen collected dues and updated the guild roster.   We will email the roster to paid members so they will have updated email address, home address, and phone numbers of the members.

4 - Programs for the year: we are excited about doing some charity quilt projects this year.  Our first “sit and sew” to make a charity quilt will be at our November meeting.  Lorelei will have information about this charity project at the October meeting.

How YOU Can Help Libby Lehman

I'm sure that some of you know Libby Lehman (having taken quilting classes from her or seen her quilting videos), well.. she recently had a massive stroke / brain aneurysm and Ricky Tims, and Alex Anderson have been posting updates on their blog regarding her medical status.

Now they are sharing ways you can help and we thought we'd share that with you.
***************************************************************
June 2013
How YOU Can Help Libby Lehman!
WIN A Quilt From Alex Anderson or Ricky Tims
100% of Proceeds Go Directly to the Libby Lehman Medical Fund.

A Note From Ricky & Alex:
Following the medical tragedy of our dear freind Libby Lehman, there has been an outpouring of concern from quilters all over the world asking how they can help. Quilters want to make quilts, but Libby does not need quilts. The kind gesture of making a quilt for Libby and sending it to her will create more challenges than comfort for her and her family, with whom we remain in close communication. Please do not make and send quilts to Libby and her family. Cards and quilted greeting cards are fine.

After weeks of "waiting" to determine the best way we as a quilting community can help, the mission is clear: to raise funds to help offset the staggering costs of medical expenses and rehabilitation expenses. Libby's Medicare is ending soon but the medical expenses will continue for a very long time. We need to raise funds to assist. Outlined below are three ways you can help.  READ ON!

Method One - Enter To Win Ricky's/Alex's Quilt
Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims are each donating a quilt as a fundraiser. Two people's names will be drawn. The first name drawn will have a choice of either quilt. The second name drawn will get the other quilt.

Amish Sawtooth Star

Made entirely by Alex Anderson and published in her book Simply Stars (page 41). It is machine-pieced and hand-quilted with meandering feathers in the body of the quilt and a twisted feather border. It is a classic Alex Anderson quilt and is in excellent condition. (52"x 52")

Harmonic Convergence - Revelation

Made entirely by Ricky Tims and made from Ricky's first commercial fabric line.  It is machine-pieced using Ricky's Convergence technique and machine-quilted on a domestic machine with both variegated and metallic threads. It is finished using Ricky's well-known piped-binding method. This contemporary wall quilt measures (48" x 48") and is in excellent condition.

Enter & Contribute:
1. Click on the Link below to get the registration form. Print out the form, fill it out, include a donation, and mail everything to the TQS office: TQS/Libby Lehman P.O. Box 418, La Veta, CO 81055.
click here =>  http://www.thequiltshow.com/os/pub/libby_contest_20130612.pdf

2. Send a check, money order, or cashier's check in US Dollars made payable to "Libby Lehman Medical Fund". Your contribution (no matter how large or small- no contribution necessary to enter) will enter you in the drawing for the chance to win one of the two quilts. Naturally, our goal is to make a sizable donation to the fund. The amount you wish to send is up to you. We encourage you to be generous - $25, $50, $100, $500 or more. Thank you so much for participating in this important effort. We will report the total amount we raise in an upcoming newsletter and blog.
3. All entries received on or before July 13 will be eligible.  The drawing will be Monday, July 15th. Winners will be contacted and must respond in one week (July 22, 2013) or another name will be drawn.  Once the winners have responded it will be announced on the site.

Method Two - Raise Funds With YOUR Quilts
If you have made (or are making) a quilt for Libby, please consider finding a way for that quilt to generate money for the Libby Lehman Medical Fund. Raffle or sell it and then send the money and a picture of the quilt directly to the fund at Libby's sister Cathy's address below (not through the TQS fundraiser address in Method One above).
Better yet, do you have a quilt in your stash that you are willing to sell on Libby's behalf? If so, sell it or raffle it and send the money directly to the Medical Fund at the address below along with a picture of the quilt. This will mean so much to both Libby and her family. There is no immediate deadline for doing this.  The Lehman family will need assistance for a long time ahead.
Please make checks, money orders, and cashier's checks in US Dollars payable to "Libby Lehman Medical Fund" and send them directly to Libby's sister:
Cathy Arnold
2220 Stanmore
Houston, TX 77019

Method Three- Just GIVE!
Follow Libby's progress at www.caringbridge.org/visit/libbylehman and give whenever you can.

The following is from Libby's family:
  •  As Libby’s recovery plan is beginning to take shape, it has become clear that this will be a long and unpredictable process. Medicare will only pay for a portion of the cost of the rehab. She does not have an auxiliary policy. The burden of paying for the long-term rehab and care will fall to Libby’s husband, Lester, and the family.
  • Thank you to all who have donated to CaringBridge in tribute to Libby.  Although those contributions do not go toward any medical expenses, they have helped to make possible this website communication.
  • If you would like to make a much needed contribution toward Libby’s rehab and other extensive medical expenses, it would help ensure that Libby gets the best medical care possible.
  • A bank account has been set up at JPMorgan Chase Bank. The name of the account is the “Libby Lehman Medical Fund.” Checks, money orders, or cashier’s checks (U.S. dollars only) should be made out to “Libby Lehman Medical Fund” and mailed to her sister, Cathy Arnold, 2220 Stanmore, Houston, TX 77019.  Please include your name and address if it is not on the check. If you wish to use an online secure transfer method from any bank (called Chase Quick Pay), please email Cathy’s husband, Bill Arnold, at bill.arnold@rice.edu, and he will provide you with proper instructions.
  • Bill Arnold and Bill Askey, Libby's brother-in-laws, are the Trustees of the Fund and the only signors on the bank account. To the extent possible by the amount of funds in the account, they will be responsible for issuing checks to pay for any medical bills that are presented by Lester. The family is very appreciative of all cards, letters, quilt pieces, and contributions received on behalf of our beloved sister, Libby. She is a real treasure to all of us, and we all want her to be able to recover to the best of her abilities.

From the Oklahoma City Modern Quilt Guild:

Oklahoma Tornado Relief - Moore Love

Thank you to everyone who has offered their help and have been so patient with us as we try to devise a plan.  Many wonderful ideas were sent to us, our guild members had many fabulous thoughts, and we discussed them all at our meeting last night.

We know you want something tangible to go to the victims of these horrific tornadoes.  We have had many offers of completed quilts, and due to limited man power on our end, we have decided to ask everyone to send completed quilts to our guild rather than blocks.  It could be a quilt you have waiting for a good home, a new one you want to make special just for someone in need, it can be modern, traditional, any size, any colors, made by an individual or a group.  You send us your completed quilts and we will get them to those in need.

Quilts will be due to the OKC Modern Quilt Guild by June 30th.  If you e-mail us at okcmqg@gmail.com we will get an address to you.

Our guild will also be creating two quilts to raise money for two charities in the form of a drawing, as money is a big need for that area right now.  That post should go up about mid June so please stay on the lookout for that one!

Thank you for your outpouring of support, love, positive thoughts, prayers... and quilts!"

Blocks for Boston

Details are as follows for the blocks to bring to the meeting tomorrow:

Quilts for Boston is a relief effort by the Boston Modern Quilt guild to make quilts for those that have been directly affected by the bombing and subsequent events.

Our goal is to make bright and modern quilts that will bring cheer to those who need it most!  This summer we hope to distribute at least 50 quilts to those who could benefit from a token of our love and support.  To achieve this goal we are asking the modern quilt community to support our efforts by sending us blocks for these quilts.

We would like to have the quilts ready to deliver to those in need as soon as possible, so we ask that you send your blocks to us by May 24, 2013.  Be creative with your blocks, and make any pattern or design that inspires you!

Thank you all so much for your support!

Please follow these guidelines when constructing and submitting your blocks:

  • To give these quilts a cohesive look we chose the colors of the Boston Marathon: blue, yellow, gray and white.  Both print and solid fabrics are welcome.
  • All blocks should be 12½” tall x the width of your choice. That could mean 12½” x 7”, 12½” x 12½”, or anything wider, more narrow, or in between.
  • Please machine piece your blocks in any style you would like.
  • Please use only “quilt shop quality” 100% cotton or cotton/linen fabrics.
  • Our preference is white or light gray 100% cotton thread, but any coordinating thread of good quality will do.
Please mail all blocks by May 24th, 2013 to:

Traditional to Modern Block Challenge – Basket
Penny was the only one who brought in a block- fabric substitution from the ‘traditional’ type of fabric used.
Just before meeting broke, Laura arrived. She had done a red/white paper pieced block in keeping with her other red and white challenge blocks.
** we decided to keep the Traditional To Modern Challenge as a basket for May since so many people were out or hadn’t gotten to it. (Lynn did take pictures of at least Penny’s)
Check for pictures of the Basket challenge blocks on facebook. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.527168957324754.1073741829.200809193294067&type=1

Winner of Viewer’s choice was –no  viewer’s choice since at the time of presentation it was only Penny.

No self-Sampler challenge blocks

Lois did two blocks…circles appliquéd using Asian fabrics on white (see Lynn’s pix)  https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.527168957324754.1073741829.200809193294067&type=1
Lorelei- put nine of the box in square blocks from first week together to create a 36”x 36” size blanket. Will appliqué a series of solid and open circles OVER the box in square blocks….eventually to become a neonatal/charity quilt. (See Picture)
