November Educational Directions - Improvisational Piecing using Curves

November Educational Directions - Improvisational Piecing using Curves

** Check out the 2 websites below before starting this project.  They are very helpful.

Use 2 or 3 colors that have a high contrast to make your square.  Your choice of fabrics - can use prints or solids.

Make a 12” square.

You can make smaller sections using curves and then join them together to make the larger block.  Or you can start with 2 pieces of fabric that are at least 14” square and then start cutting your curves with your rotary cutter.  Sew the curved seams together.  Square up your square to a 12” block.

Some tips for sewing curves without pins:

Lay your 2 fabrics (right side up) and make gentle curves with your rotary cutter.

  • ensure you are sewing with an accurate 1/4" seam. Using a 1/4” foot is helpful
  • if your sewing machine has a needle down setting, use it, otherwise just lower the needle into the fabric if you need to stop and adjust the fabric
  • reduce your stitch length to smaller than usual. This will give you a nice smooth curve (I used about a 2 on my sewing machine)
  • (optional) have tweezers handy for holding the fabric together at the end of the curve
  • go slowly
  • don't pull the fabric, just ease and guide it through the machine

Curved Piecing without templates - sewing without pins - check out these 2 sites which are very helpful.  No applique for this month’s block.

Have fun with the curved piecing.  Bring your block to our next regular meeting in January.

Modern Quilting Concepts to keep in mind

Modern quilts and quilters:

  • Make primarily functional rather than decorative quilts
  • Use asymmetry in quilt design
  • Rely less on repetition and on the interaction of quilt block motifs
  • Contain reinterpreted traditional blocks
  • Embrace simplicity and minimalism
  • Utilize alternative block structures or lack of visible block structure
  • Incorporate increased use of negative space
  • Are inspired by modern art and architecture
  • Frequently use improvisational piecing
  • Contain bold colors, on trend color combinations and graphic prints
  • Often use gray and white as neutrals
  • Reflect an increased use of solid fabrics
  • Focus on finishing quilts on home sewing machines

October - Modern Quilt Challenge Block instructions

October Educational Project

Using your block from September do the following:
  1. Slice the block up into different widths: at least one inch or larger.
  2. Decide if you want to slice your block vertically, horizontally or diagonally.
  3. From your stash choose a solid color (or fabric that works as a solid color).  You will be adding this fabric to your quilt block.  (You can even use the same fabric as you added in September).Reference: http://www.flickr.com/photos/quiltconblockchallenge/7966067438/in/pool-quiltconblockchallenge
  4. With your strips make a new 14 inch block.
Enjoy and have fun ........

September - Modern Quilt Challenge Block instructions

September Educational Directions - Improvisational Piecing

You have been given a bag of material "supplies" to begin the education in modern quilting techniques.

Your first task is to create an improvisational piece.
The ONLY directions you have are as follows:
  1. Using the two long strips of fabric lay them RSU (right sides UP - like stack and whack).
  2. Then slice and dice, using your rotary cutter.  Use different widths.  Make the widths wide enough to sew back together ( At least 1 inch wide).  No curves at this point in time please - only straight cuts.
  3. Lay the pieces out on your cutting table.  Alternate the cut strips any way you'd like to "create" TWO new pieced strips - approximate length to be equal.
  4. Using the small additional square of fabric as well as your two new pieced strips, add a solid or a color that reads like a solid from your stash, to create a block which is approximately 12 inches square.
Be creative in your cutting and piecing.  Remember: no curves.

All joining of fabric pieces MUST BE completed with your sewing machine - not hand pieced.  There should be no appliqué on your project (at this point).

It is OK to do something different - out of your comfort zone.

4.  Reminded everyone to wear name tags or make your own.  No discussion regarding having "fines" for "NO Personal name tag" wearing to begin in January.
5.  Reviewed Minutes and Treasurers report for September.
6.  Discussed membership dues again.  Reminded that everyone has to pay $5 for year long membership (runs September - September).  Cash only (we do not have checking account yet).  Reminded everyone to verify address, phone number and email addresses.  Announced that members' in good standing get reminders for upcoming meetings and can participate in block and other guild projects.
7.  Reviewed progress on Guild Wall-Hanging.  It is looking beautiful.  One word is left to quilt then the binding and sleeve attachment are to be completed.  Discussion was held regarding the label as to whom worked on the quilt.  Kathy Lyman will do the label (embroidered) for the back of the quilt identifying who worked on the Wall-Hanging. We also had a discussion for the details of the meeting time and date:  this information will be attached across the bottom of the quilt and sewn on with loops and buttons attached to the bottom of the quilt.  Kathy Lyman will also embroider this information for attachment.
8.  Upcoming Program ideas for the year discussion:  Maggie Early - painting quilts,  a member takes a topic from a magazine or book, works the directions, and then does a presentation for the members, Bonnie Hunter - crumb quilter?
9.  Field trips discussion:  Spoonflower, Orange durham Quilt show and guild, other guild, quilt shop travels.  A committee needs to be formed regarding working together for filed trips or retreats.  Sherry Ward will do some beginning work on this task.  It would be best to form a working committee to work on this project.
10.  "Educational" Block show and tell:  17 individuals participated in the block show and tell - the results were interesting and very much fun.  Four more individuals signed up to begin the process and will show their blocks at the next meeting. The November education block will focus on Graphic Stripes and Angles - instructions were handed out.

CFMGQ September 17th - Meeting Minutes

Cape Fear Modern Quilt Guild meeting notes - 9/17/2012

Kathy Lyman, our new president, welcomed members and guests.  She asked members to wear a name tag to the meetings so we can get to know the members.

Karen Smith, our Treasurer,  passed around a list of members to verify contact information.  Will continue to update the member information in October and quarterly.  Only members in good standing will receive reminder emails regarding upcoming monthly meetings.  Only paid members will be able to participate in Round Robins and other guild projects.

Yearly dues are due in September ($5.00).  The board is considering increasing the dues next year to $1/month for a total of $12/year payable in September of each year.

Mary Harned volunteered to be the webmaster and will take care of updates to the guild blog and facebook page.  Mary reviewed how to find the facebook page (Cape Fear Modern Quilt guild and the blog (http://cfmqg.blogspot.com). Mary also showed how to make comments on the blog.  Members are encouraged to blog their ideas or speak up at the meetings. The Board will consider all comments as we progress in our growth.

The guild’s wall hanging will need to be finished by guild members.  Thank you to Sarah and Chris who have started the process.  Thank you to the volunteers who signed up to help finish the wall hanging.  Hopefully the wall hanging can be completed by Thanksgiving.

The guild is looking for volunteers to help with programs, housekeeping (set up the room and put it back together), and hospitality.  Thank you to Penny and Didi for volunteering to help with housekeeping.  Thank you to Sherry for help with programs but she needs some other members to help with that committee.  We still need a volunteer for hospitality.

The purpose of the guild is to encourage members‘ skill development with contemporary quilting techniques.  To promote the overall goal, the board has designed a monthly educational activity to begin with the September meeting.  Members were provided with beginning supplies and directions to begin the project (brown lunch bag).  The cost will be supported by the September dues.  October, November, and January will begin the educational process.  A break in December due to the holidays.  In February the guild will begin a “Round Robin” process using the techniques learned in the guild meetings this year.  If a guild member misses a meeting, the member will be provided with written directions for “catch-up”.

The focus of the monthly educational topics will be the following:

  • Sept. - improvisational piecing
  • Oct. - use of graphic stripes and angles
  • Nov. - use of minimalism or negative space
  • January - curves in modern quilting

The goal is to build on each technique using a Round Robin process starting in February.  The last education process will feature a different “twist” on the project.

Members are encouraged to use their stash of fabrics (if the directions indicate) and not “risk” using “good” fabrics to learn a specific technique.

The Board decided to follow a standardized format to our monthly meeting as follows:
  • Call to order
  • Each member introduces self
  • Guests introduce themselves or are introduced by the member
  • Minutes are read from the previous meeting
  • Treasurer’s report is read
  • Guild business
  • Outside program presentation or guild program/educational presentation
  • Guild show and tell
The Board is beginning to explore a quilting retreat for Spring.  Ideas: modern quilting retreat, charity quilt using a new technique.  Let the board know if you have any ideas about location or focus of the retreat.

Field trips: The Board is soliciting ideas for a Guild field trip.  Possible ideas include Spoonflower in Durham and the Durham-Orange quilt show.  Penny suggested the special art exhibit at UNC Greensboro (check out “Herb & Dorothy” documentary who collected 4,000 pieces of art and donated 50 pieces to each of the 50 states).  Let the Board know if you have any ideas (can put your ideas on our blog or facebook page or share at the next meeting.

Sept. educational program: Donna Bergman shared  improvisational piecing technique using 2 fabrics.  She shared a pillow using this technique.  Directions and paper bags with fabrics were passed out to members.  More information about this technique can be found in this magazine: American Quilter - AQS (Sept. 2012).

Show and Tell - check out the photos on our facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.440056752702642.92389.200809193294067&type=1

CFMGQ August 20th - Meeting Minutes

Cape Fear Modern Quilt Guild Meeting - August 20, 2012

Business meeting: Today we voted on the officers for the coming year. Here are the results of the election:
President - Kathy Lyman
Vice President - Gloria Pope
Secretary - Donna Bergman
Treasurer - Karen Smith

Thank you to the all the work of the outgoing board and the bylaw committee (Donna, Penny, Karen, Becky, and Sherry) to write the bylaws and get the guild organized. Thank you to the nominating committee (Sue and Elaine) for your help with the elections.

Other News:
Gloria Pope is starting a quilt group in Little River which will meet the first Friday of the month (Sept. 7 th first meeting).  Contact Gloria for more information.
Joyce DeLucia is organizing a class in quilt history.  For more information check the website of the Brunswick Quilt Guild.
Linda will be going to Houston - she has a quilt that will be on display at the show.

Guest Speaker: Kathy Stuart, quilt artist
Kathy provided so much inspiration today and a wonderful trunk show.  She started quilting in 2000 but has been sewing since the age of 4.  As Kathy shared her quilts, she talked about what she learned from each quilt.  She has done a wide range of quilts from pieced, applique, fiber art to whole cloth quilts.  Her machine quilting on the quilts was stunning and amazing.  Kathy has won many awards for her beautiful quilts and gave tips and pointers about what judges look for.  She loves challenges and likes to get feedback on her quilts.  Her ugly fabric challenge quilt was very unique and fun.  I especially liked the culture challenge quilt called “Hello my name is Kathy”.  Kathy’s name was written in many different languages - a very fun quilt.

Kathy likes to experiment with many different surface design techniques. She took two of the three ribbons at the Brunswick Quilters Show in May. She uses lots of different media: paint, silk, etc and specializes in whole cloth designs.
Don't miss this one. It promises to be an inspirational Trunk Show.

CFMQG July 16th Meeting Minutes

Cape Fear Modern Quilt Guild Meeting, July 16th, 2012
When we realized we were plunging into creative conversation without thinking about it, Donna Lockwood called the meeting to order.
Business: Next month, our meeting will take place on Monday, August 20th, and the order of business will include election of a slate of officers for the next CFMQG year, starting in September of 2012. All members who have paid this year’s $5 dues are eligible to vote and hold office.  Members who will not be able to attend the meeting next month may obtain a ballot from Donna Bergman. Please do attend next month if you can!
Program: Ann Hope Marvin presented a really interesting talk, with beautiful quilts and samples, about battings in general and the ease and efficiency of using fusible batting in particular. She specified that Hobbs fusible was the most effective, since it could easily be repositioned numerous times, while some other fusible batting instantly becomes permanently bonded when it is heat set. We learned the meaning of terms like ‘loft’ and ‘scrim’ and we discussed battings made from cotton, wool, silk, bamboo, and the most suitable uses for the various types. Did you know that ‘Warm and Natural’ was not originally designed to be quilt batting, but rather window insulation? It’s great for small wall hangings, but not so great for a quilt you want to drape and soften. This terrific talk proved that the hidden parts of our quilts can be interesting and contribute to the beauty of a finished project too! Thanks Ann!!!
Future Challenges: Once again we talked about a profusion and maybe a confusion of possible challenge or group projects. Ideas abound. Three topics that came up again were the idea of doing small art quilts to support the Alzheimers’ Quilt Project, the idea of doing some type of row by row exchange, and the notion of participating in the national MQG challenge involving a 12” x ?? block. There were also some fun conversations about what members are planning and doing with the Round Robin quilt tops we got back last month.
Show and Tell: Featured this month was a spectacular bed-size quilt with dense all over home machine quilting, several quilt tops in progress, bags and pillows too! Keep quilting and having fun.    Click here to see all quilts, bags, pillows and wall hangings that were shared by the group.  http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=418254338216217&set=a.418254278216223.86363.200809193294067&type=1&theater

July CFMQG Meeting - July 16th

Our next meeting will be at 10am Monday July 16th @ Sew Happins.

Program: We are very lucky to have Anne Hope Marvin talk about batting. She's is a very entertaining speaker and an excellent quilter.

Business:  If anyone has examples of group projects that might be fun for us to do ( e.g. row-by-row, replication of greeting card) they should bring them to show.

Show n' Tell - bring you latest projects.

CFMQG Meeting Minutes - June 18, 2012

CFMQG Meeting June 18, 2012
Despite excited restlessness on the part of Round Robin participants waiting for ‘the big reveal’, the meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. on June 18th.  We were reminded of the Quilt Expo in Raleigh coming on the following Saturday, as well as the QBTS annual show coming up next weekend on Friday and Saturday (no Sunday opening this year).
Business: A visiting member asked about dues. They are $5 for the remainder of this guild year. We were happy to welcome a new member on the spot! Karen Smith reported a total of $36.28 in our very modest treasury. The group agreed that we should not seek to get a checking account until we have a substantial enough amount in our treasury to justify the expense of an account. An additional question came up about how voting for next year’s officers will be conducted. Can members who must be absent submit an ‘absentee ballot’? Answer to be determined.
THE BIG REVEAL:  Ten guild members received completed Round Robin quilt tops, along with one very special eleventh one made for our friend Claudia Smalley, who has been seriously ill. The ‘album’ of photos taken of the Round Robin projects reveals an amazing range of color, technique, taste and creativity. We are all thrilled and inspired to go forward to more projects.
See final round results ==> http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=406515969390054&set=a.406489689392682.84052.200809193294067&type=1&theater
What next?: CFMQG members, tap your creative urges! We are looking for an idea for our next project and also for good ideas for programs for future guild meetings.
Respectfully submitted
  Penny Schmitt
   Interim Secretary.
