CF Modern Quilting Group Meeting Notes - Nov 17, 2014

We had a brief meeting on Monday before our Charity Quilt Sew-in.

Intro's for new members:  Alice Rainey and Molly Bigelow

Block of the month calendar blocks (no one had one to share this month) - theme was Thanksgiving/Harvest

Show and Tell- several people shared projects they had completed

Idea for Spring: Individual Round Robin for oneself.  Laura will set up and will present in April

Karen Smith showed some quilting done from tutorials on The Inbox Jaunt.  The   web site is: theinboxjaunt.com    host: Lori Kennedy

Idea presented for December meeting to be a holiday luncheon; Suggestion for Sweet and Savory since they could accommodate us at our normal 10a.m. time. Lorelei will look into and Mary will send email to everyone.
Please RSVP as soon as possible.

Charity Sew- Lynn had to be out so Lorelei led.    The pattern was the Disappearing Nine Patch with a modern take.  All initial blocks sewn and cut. About 1/2 put back together; rest taken home to complete. Please bring to January meeting.

I found in my notes from Sept that in Jan we are supposed to bring an inspirational photo. We did NOT mention this at the meeting so we should be sure to bring it up at the Dec. brunch.

Natalia Bonner Workshop openings - October 18th

The Quilters by the Sea Guild has openings in the Natalia Bonner workshop on October 18th and have opened it up to non-members.

The workshop is titled Lattice (a piece contemporary quilt using traditional techniques).

The cost is $25.00 for QBTS members and $35.00 for nonmembers.
If interested contact Miranda.  Email mmdscitimeATearthlinkDOTnet
----------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Miranda Dungan <mmdscitimeATearthlinkDOTnet>
Date: October 4, 2014 at 10:45:48 AM EDT

Subject: Natalia Bonner workshop 10/18

Hi all:  the workshop with Natlia Bonner is only 2 weeks away.  She has recommended that we cut the fabric for the Lattice quilt on page 85 of her book Modern One-Block Quilts by Natalia Bonner and Kathleen Whiting before we come so we can spend more time sewing.  I am planning on making the smallest of the 3 sizes listed so I can use it for a baby quilt.

If you do not yet have the book please get one:  you can check local quilt shops or rode one online.  I ordered mine from Amazon.  Natalia will have books to sell but you may want one before the class.  If you already have the book, go to age 85 and follow the directions for fabric selection and cutting.  You can substitute scrap fabric for the red or gray fabric, but you will need a solid background for the white fabric.

Skip the next set of instructions if you have the book and use the book.

If you are waiting for the book you will need
7/8 yard of a printed fabric (or scraps) for the crosses
7/8 yard of a second fabric  (or scraps)  for the strips that form the lattice
1 1/2 yards of white or a solid for the background

Again for the baby quilt you need to cut  (use the book if you have it— it has more detail)
128   strips 1 1/4 by 4 inches  for the crosses
128   strips 1/14 by 3 inches for the crosses (second side)
       128   strips 1/14 by 5 1/4 for the lattice
       64   squares 4 1/4 inch x 4 1/4 inch for the background
       64   2 1/4 x 2 1/4  inch square to make triangles for background
       64   2  3/8 x 5 1/4 inch strips for the background

For everyone:
Bring standard sewing machine and supplies needed to sew.  We will have extension cords and irons.
Please be on time so we can get started promptly—maybe we can get the top pieced!
Notebook and pencil plus your book for Natalia to sign and  you to refer to during the class.
Bring a lunch and a drink.

Note:  Due to the small number of people in the class, you will get a lot of individual attention.  If you know of anyone who would like to come, have them email me at mmdscitimeATearthlinkDOTnet.  Then give them a copy of this list.  I  will share it with the Brunswick and Jacksonville guilds, and you are free to share it with other groups you know about.   The cost is $25.00 for QBTS members and $35.00 for nonmembers.

I am looking forward to a fun day.  Natalia has a website (Piece N Quilts), a blog found on her website, and a Pinterest site, so check her out.  See you in two weeks!

CF Modern Quilting Group Meeting notes - Sept 15, 2014

Treasurer’s report by Karen.  We will use some of the money to pay for fabric, batting, and backing for next charity sew- in at the November meeting.
Karen started collecting the dues for the upcoming year.   Dues for the year are $5.

CalendarTheme challenge blocks:

Jan. - A bird in winter
Feb. - Heart
March - National quilting month
April - Azalea Festival
May - Photograph
June - Beach/ ocean
July - America
August - Picnic
Sept. - Back to school
Oct. - Fall
Nov. - Thanksgiving
Dec. - Winter Holidays

Discussion of possible challenges or ideas for our group:

  1. Photo challenge - use a photo for inspiration to make a small quilt.   The group liked this idea so we will do this challenge in January. I am sure more details will follow in upcoming meetings.  Each member who wants to participate will bring a photo or picture from a magazine with their name on the back to the January meeting.   Each person will draw a photo from a bag (not your own photo). Then make a small quilt (size yet to be determined).  In June (or whatever month we will decide for the completion of the challenge), bring the photo and you photo inspired quilt to show and give back to the owner of the photo.  Hope this sounds clear to you too. But we will have more discussion at this new challenge at future meetings. Sounds like a fun challenge.
  2. Another challenge idea: using the 100 Modern Blocks book.   If you own this book, bring to the January meeting for discussion about a challenge.
Lynn shared a blog about using large letters in a quilt: Patchery Menagerie blog (posts at July 24 shows quilts with lettering.

Lynn volunteered to head up our November charity sew-in.   Thanks Lynn.

Show and Tell photos can be found on our Facebook Page ==> https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.749728151735499.1073741859.200809193294067&type=1

Reminders for next meeting on October 20:

  • Bring your October calendar block (Fall theme) and any other calendar blocks that you have not shared yet.
  • Bring your challenge bag (batik fabric swap) if you haven’t shared your bag yet.
  • Information will be given about what to bring for the November charity sew-in - you will need to pre-cut some of the fabric using your own fabric scraps.

Pincushion Swap @ Holiday Party (Jan 20th)

Our January 20th meeting will be our Holiday Brunch at Kathy's house (10 am to 1 pm) and we will be having a pincushion swap.

Never made a pincushion before?   That's me.  So, I thought I'd share with you some inspiration links and how-to links.

Pincushion ideas:  http://www.pinterest.com/studiodloft/make-some-pin-cushions/

Stuffing for pincushions:  http://buzzingandbumbling.blogspot.co.uk/2011/06/stuffing-pin-cushi.html

Don't forget to wrap your pincushion for the swap.

I can't wait to see what you've created.   This is an optional challenge.   If you do not want to participate… you can still attend the Holiday Brunch.

Happy Stitchin.
