Cape Fear Modern Quilt Guild Meeting, July 16th, 2012
When we realized we were plunging into creative conversation without thinking about it, Donna Lockwood called the meeting to order.
Business: Next month, our meeting will take place on Monday, August 20th, and the order of business will include election of a slate of officers for the next CFMQG year, starting in September of 2012. All members who have paid this year’s $5 dues are eligible to vote and hold office. Members who will not be able to attend the meeting next month may obtain a ballot from Donna Bergman. Please do attend next month if you can!
Program: Ann Hope Marvin presented a really interesting talk, with beautiful quilts and samples, about battings in general and the ease and efficiency of using fusible batting in particular. She specified that Hobbs fusible was the most effective, since it could easily be repositioned numerous times, while some other fusible batting instantly becomes permanently bonded when it is heat set. We learned the meaning of terms like ‘loft’ and ‘scrim’ and we discussed battings made from cotton, wool, silk, bamboo, and the most suitable uses for the various types. Did you know that ‘Warm and Natural’ was not originally designed to be quilt batting, but rather window insulation? It’s great for small wall hangings, but not so great for a quilt you want to drape and soften. This terrific talk proved that the hidden parts of our quilts can be interesting and contribute to the beauty of a finished project too! Thanks Ann!!!
Future Challenges: Once again we talked about a profusion and maybe a confusion of possible challenge or group projects. Ideas abound. Three topics that came up again were the idea of doing small art quilts to support the Alzheimers’ Quilt Project, the idea of doing some type of row by row exchange, and the notion of participating in the national MQG challenge involving a 12” x ?? block. There were also some fun conversations about what members are planning and doing with the Round Robin quilt tops we got back last month.
Show and Tell: Featured this month was a spectacular bed-size quilt with dense all over home machine quilting, several quilt tops in progress, bags and pillows too! Keep quilting and having fun. MARK YOUR CALENDAR NOW FOR THE AUGUST 20th MEETING!!!!!!!!!!!
