Cape Fear Modern Quilting Guild - Minutes from our December 16, 2013 Meeting


Welcome to our December meeting.

Reminders
 - Pay annual dues of $5.
 - January 20th meeting will be our Holiday Brunch at Kathy's house (10 am to 1 pm).   Directions will be sent via email prior to the brunch.

  • Spouses and friends are welcome.
  • Bring a dish to share for the brunch.
  • If you are participating in the Pincushion exchange, please wrap your pincushion for the swap.   
  • Bring finished charity blocks to our holiday meeting.
  • Bring ideas of places to donate our charity quilt.

Treasurer's report - was presented by Karen

Charity quilt -

  • Lorelei collected the finished charity blocks.
  • Kathy asked members to find an organization in our area who could use a charity quilt (ex. Handmade with love, Cape Fear Hospice, nursing homes, etc.)
  • Bring the contact information (contact person and address) to the Jan. meeting.

Member Spotlight:  Lois.   Thank you, Lois for bringing in your quilts to share with our group.  We really enjoyed your quilts and your quilt stories.

Meeting notes from Nov. 18, 2013

Reminders for our December 16th meeting:
- bring your charity blocks from November's meeting
- bring your holiday quilts for show and tell
- member spotlight - Lois
- fat quarter exchange - blue/white
- traditional made modern block challenge - Snowman or Snowflake
- sign up for food to bring to the holiday brunch in January
- bring a UFO that you want suggestions about how to finish the quilt (let us help you get unstuck)

November Meeting
Welcome to new members - Marion and Diane
Treasurer's report presented by Karen
Idea for sharing at future meetings: bring your favorite book or quilting tool to share
Fat quarter exchange was Holiday (4 members participated)

Traditional Made Modern - Tree.
Mary made holiday tree cards, Karen made a tree mug rug, Linda made a modern tree wall hanging, Donna made a small holiday tree wall hanging

Show & Tell - Mary showed a leaf quilt, Lynn showed a rose quilt from a 5 day workshop with Anne shaw who teaches Ruth McDowell's techniques, Donna showed a candy cane star table topper

Charity Sew In (lead by Lorelei):  Lorelei found a quilt square (stash buster on Craftsy blog) for our first sew in.  About 10 members brought their sewing machines to sew the blocks.  Lorelei and new member Diane helped with cutting and ironing during the sew in.  Can't wait to see all the blocks in December.  Thank you, Lorelei for organizing our first charity sew in.

Reminder: Our next CF Modern Quilting Guild meeting is Monday Nov. 18th & RSVP for Charity Sew-In


Our next CF Modern Quilting Guild Meeting is Nov 18th @ 10am @ Sew Happins.

What's up at this meeting?

* Charity Sew-In: bring sewing machine and supplies, 2 contrasting fat quarters that are (pre-cut).

PLEASE RSVP if you plan to participate in the Sew-In.  We will need to know how many people will be coming so that we have enough white fabric - fat quarters.  If you missed our last meeting (where we passed around a sign-up sheet), let Donna (d2bergmanATyahooDOTcom) or Lorelei (nl.hauptmannATgmailDOTcom) know if you plan on participating on the charity project at our Nov meeting.

October 21, 2013 Cape Fear Modern Quilting Guild - Meeting notes

Lorelei welcomed new member, Linda, and 2 guests to our monthly meeting.

Sept. meeting minutes are on the blog.

Mary talked about the resources on our blog: website links for inspiration.  Also Craftsy blog has lots of ideas and inspiration plus on line classes.

Traditional Made Modern: Pumpkin
Lots of variety and creativity with the pumpkin projects: Lois made a smocked pumpkin; Penny made a pumpkin table runner with 3 pumpkins; Mary used texture magic to make a blue pumpkin; Donna made  a selvage pumpkin pillow; Lynn made a curved pumpkin square; and Teddy used 2 & 1/2” squares for a scrappy pumpkin square.

Fat quarter exchange: Brown

Charity Quilt Sew- In at our November 18 meeting:
Lorelei explained the directions for the block and supplies to bring to our next meeting.
We will use the blocks made at the meeting for a charity quilt.
She found the quilt block idea on Craftsy website.

Donna will buy the white fabric from the shop and Lorelei will pre-cut the white fabric before the meeting.  We will need to know how many people will be coming so that we have enough white fabric - fat quarters.  If you missed the meeting, let Donna or Lorelei know if you plan on participating with the charity project at our next meeting.

Spring Charity sewing project:  Linda had a suggestion for our spring charity sewing project:  She has lots of “Quilts of Valor” blocks that we could make a quilt or 2 at our next charity sew project in the spring. Other members could also bring blocks to the charity sew in the spring.

General Show and Tell
* Projects from Alice Ridge’s Curves class: Lois, Mary, Donna, and Lynn
* Penny - lasagna quilt, and Modern Urban Holiday quilt top
* Lois - Urban Holiday quilt using oriental fabric
* Linda - Reverse applique piece, star wallhanging, and blue wallhanging with handmade clay beads
* Teddy - memory quilt of her father in law’s shirts with photos, and a mini-quilt for Christmas using mini-charm squares (2 & 1/2” squares)
