CFMQ Guild August 17, 2015 Meeting Notes
There were only 5 of us today : me, Molly, Dianne, Lois and Karen....so we had a very casual meeting.
Fabric bowls
Arlene had transmission trouble and couldn't make the meeting. Dianne brought all the stuff to go over it, but we kind of thought we should wait for Arlene. Two of us were already familiar with making the bowls anyway...so we unanimously decided to postpone it.
Challenge Round Robbin
We discussed for a bit.....
Reminder: We will start collecting dues again in Sept. $5/yr dues.
We currently have ~$217 in our bank.
Lois will send for the Modern Patchwork subscription.
Sharing: I shared a lap quilt for the Leland House project that started as the modern square in square that we did 2 years ago. Also I showed the 'Delectable Mountains' block that Brunswick Quilters is using as the basis of their 2016 raffle quilt. I sold some tickets for this year's raffle quilt. I'll bring again in October.
Arlene gave Dianne a quilt for Nepal.

Even if you don't wish to enter quilts this year, we would like to extend a special invitation for you to come and visit our show at the Civic Center. Festivities will include over 100 quilts, vendor booths with machines, fabric, books, and sewing supplies, door prizes, raffle baskets, demonstrations, the guild's boutique of handmade items, and our 2013 raffle quilt, "A Southern Album Quilt".
A unique part of our show is the “Turning of the Quilts”. This is a presentation featuring
antique quilts with a narrative describing them and their history. The guild has a surprise in store for our guests.
Our members have made a quilted car cover that entirely covers an automobile.
You may spot it around the area prior to the show and it will have a place of honor at the show.
If you have any questions or concerns, you may contact us at 919-499-0766 or

We're invited to a Modern Sewing Retreat (in Wilmington, NC) September 24-27th 2015
Swapaholics - A modern sewing retreat in Wilmington, NC for all the swap lovers out there!
What will we do?
Imagine a weekend filled with friends, time to sew, and the opportunity to learn new projects and techniques from some amazingly creative teachers. Each class will be geared toward items that will make great swap gifts. We will also have a handful of swaps going on throughout the weekend, as well as a pre-retreat swap. Classes are not mandatory, though we're sure you won't want to miss out on any of them! Expect a laid back schedule, with plenty of time to sew and relax with friends. And if you want to take a break from it all, downtown Wilmington is a destination not to be missed.
What will be included?
Included in your ticket cost will be access to the sewing room from Thursday night--Sunday morning as well as 6 classes! We have a variety of classes that will be taught by some of our favorite modern sewists. A detailed list of fabric requirements for each class will be available so that you can prepare your favorite prints for the projects. Additional class supplies such as batting and miscellaneous sewing notions will be provided for you. We are particularly excited about the amazing swag bag you will receive upon arrival! There will also be lots of giveaways and prizes throughout the retreat.
This doesn't even include the swag you get from swapping!
What is not included?
The cost of the retreat ticket does not include meals or sleeping arrangements. There is a wide variety of amazing restaurants and eateries within walking distance to the hotel (downtown Wilmington has so much to offer!). There will be discounted hotel rooms available at the Hilton, but if you're looking for something a bit more cozy, there are several bed and breakfasts that are within walking distance to the hotel.
Where will the retreat be held? Wilmington Riverside Hilton
When will it be? September 24th-27th 2015

May 18th Meeting: Embellishments in Quilts: “Rocks”
(Adapted
from Quilting Arts)
Supplies
to bring to demonstration:
- Various sizes of Sewing Needles. Hand quilting needles do not work the best.
- Thread to match the material you bring.
- A thimble is helpful.
- Fabric hand scissors. Your large fabric cutting scissors may be more difficult to control as as this is hand-work.
- “Rock-colored” fabrics cut into 3-6 inch squares. There is no need to be an exact square cut as we will recut the squares/fabrics in the demonstration. Fabric Colors that look good are those with patterns that appear to be “rock-like” or just interesting patterns that have lots of movement in them: sand, blacks, corals, greens.
- I will be bringing extra embellishing “fabric” that will give your “rock” another look.
- Bring a rock if it will give you inspiration.
- Timtex – about a 10 inch square. I will bring some for those who don't have any.
- Soft batting or softer quilting batting scraps. I will bring some.

Reminder: Our Next CF MQG meeting is Monday April 20th
Mark your calendar! April 20th, 10am @ Sew Happins |
Basting Bee. Dianne will bring her basting frame. (lap size up to 7.5 feet x 7.5 feet). Members can bring quilts that need basting bring pins, quilt top, batting, quilt top, and backing fabric.
Basting your quilt
Quilt top-pressed and strings/threads cut
Batting – approximately 4 inches wider and longer than quilt top
Backing – Approximately 6 inches wider and longer than quilt top and pressed
Basting pins - opened
~ 1 dozen straight pins
~ 1 dozen straight pins
a fine crochet hook or a Kwik Klip (there should be a few at Sew Happins)
For example: If your quilt top measures 48” x 72”, your batting should be 52” x 76”, and your back should measure 54” x 78”
These dimensions will give you wiggle room without a lot of waste.
No need to layer the pieces, we put them on the frame individually.
Contact Dianne if you have any questions on what to bring to this meeting.
Calendar Block for April: Azalea Festival

Meeting Notes from our 1/19/15 Modern Quilting Guild Meeting
Dianne Brisson took the pictures; I have the notes. It was a light meeting even though there were about 12 or 13 or us there.
* Karen did the treasury report
* Intro 2 new members
* All the charity blocks present were given to Lynn who will begin to assemble them. She IS looking to see if anyone who didn’t attend the meeting has blocks at home. If either Donna or Mary could send an email to the membership finding out if any are still outstanding she would appreciate that. Lynn showed the new members the idea behind the blocks we made in November
* Some people – three to be exact - had calendar blocks- Bird in Winter - we showed them.
* Show and tell- several show and tells –Dianne has pix
In discussion of group some of us remembered discussion to bring a photo that inspires us for January (none of us did) so we are pushing that to February- so that should go in the February reminder.
Also, some of us remembered something about bringing 100 Modern Quilt Blocks book (although no one could remember why!!)
Maybe it was bring a favorite book? Anyway, only I brought a book- so maybe we can discuss in Feb as well – if any of you can remember why!
That’s it for this month!
